Lord help us my baby won't sleep
« on: February 26, 2013, 05:32:57 am »
Liam's sick again with an ear infection and upper respiratory infection, second cold and 3rd ear infection since his first episode early January, on top of that his cutting 4 top teeth at once, all are visible out of the gum and must be causing extra pain, he is literally not sleeping more than six combined hours a day the last 4 days. My husbands catching the cold as well and we've both been surviving on 1-2 hrs of sleep the last four days, yesterday he slept 1230-130, 730-10am,2-3pm,6-8pm and he's still awake since then, my husband said he's sleeps like 5-10 mins then wakes up crying, he's at his wits end I'm calling off work tonight so he can get out of the house and also get sleep and ill try to take care of him but last time he was sick he still slept so I don't know what's going on or how he's functioning on such little sleep, or how my husband and I are still alive... He is so stressed he's upset with me bc I work overnights and not days, which I've done for 5yrs and can't stop until I'm done with school in April or ill never finish school since work is where I get free time to do homework, plus this way we don't need a sitter bc my anxiety is so bad I trust no one with my child other than my mother in law. Just looking for prayers that he feels better very soon bc we are falling apart over sleep deprivation.:'(

Give him a warm bath and a dose of motrin before bedtime. Then cuddle with him while he sleeps. Studies have shown that close contact with mommy or daddy actually reduces pain and stress in babies. When mine get sick I keep them cuddled up on my chest elevated or on my side in the crook of my arm. They will sleep so much better than if i just put them in a crib. Goodluck and hope he feels better soon!

Thanks, it's hard for me bc I'm not home, he always sleeps fine when I'm home, he also gets Tylenol or Motrin before bed and falls asleep with one of us, we just started having him sleep in his crib last week but only once he's asleep we move him to the crib, since he's been sick my husband had been sleeping on the couch with him, or trying to. My husband just isn't good at bedtime Liam thinks daddy is playtime and my husbands stress is making liam stressed and vice versa, btw Liam being sick and cranky and my husband being sick and cranky I'm about to turn into mega bitch and I am trying very hard not to bc I know my husbands just sick and frustrated ugh just want the teeth in and the cold gone lol

That sucks. My daughter has a cold but luckily she went to bed last night at 8 and woke up at 2AM then stayed sleep and we had to wake her at 6 to go to daycare. But the first 2 nights she was sick she would fall asleep then wake up in like 15 minutes screaming. I gave her some advil, put on a humidifier and added cough suppresant liquid to it which always helps, baby vicks on chest and feet. She's a lot better now besides her coughing up the cold but not knowing to spit it out so she just swallows it again lol. Ahhhh motherhood. Do they know why Liam keeps getting ear infections? Especially since he's not around strange kids?

No I guess if he gets another maybe they will further investigate it, dr said be sure he's not tilted his head too far back when drinking bottles bc the fluid drains in his ears, but his on an antibiotic and he's got diarrhea again this one tints the poop red and there's chunky of red in it too so I can't tell if he's having a reaction I'm waiting for dr to call back but he doesn't seem bothered with his stomach he's grabbing his ears and mouth and nose it's just overwhelming last time he was sick he only didn't sleep good the first night, then he was fine, this is a different story but I'm home tonight so we will see how it goes, like I said my husbands a great dad but bedtime isn't his strong suit

I'm not sure, no teeth came through during his last cold, where as this time they are coming through the gums, my husband has apologized for being so frustrated, I know he's overwhelmed so I've been nice lol Liam's taking a nappy next to me <3

I am so sorry! I use mullen and garlic tincture in the ears for ear infections. Garlic kills infection and mullen is an anti inflamatory. I like hyland's cold medicine, it works great.

Do u have something like a fan, humidifier, or noise machine that you could turn on while he sleeps?  I've found that to work wonders.  It's supposed to be very soothing for babies.  I also like the hylands teething tablets, they are awesome!!  Good luck, just remember it won't last forever!!

Aww hope he feels better soon, I'm dealing with the stomach flu in my one year old...no fun either!! One other thing for the teething that my guy likes is to suck on a cold damp washcloth.

No improvement after 4 days suggests to me that the antibiotic might not be working and he is suffering through the ear infection plus the antibiotic-induced diarrhea (do harass that doctor, red in the stool is not good). The particular bacterial strain acting on the infection might be resistant, especially if Liam is taking the same antibiotic treatment as one he's taken last month. The teething is probably aggravating the situation :-( I hope the doc will suggest a switch of antibiotic. When he wad 10 months old, my son had a double ear infection that resisted 3 courses of antibiotics and a shot of another antibiotic over the course of a month. His eardrums were lanced to drain the fluid and he had one last course of antibiotics that finally did it. I hope you all get some sleep and relief very soon.

I wonder if yogurt our something can help rebalance the gut flora and at least get his poop back on track...
I do hope your ped doc can do something for you... Even recommend specialist?

He's got a follow up today dr wants to see him again, his cough is terrible and doesn't seem better seems the same. I did not give him his pm dose or am dose of the antibiotic after last nights poop bc although a side effect is red color stool I don't know that there should also be red chunks in the red tinted stool so no more of that, last month he was on amoxicillin and they said he was probably allergic so this time he's on something different. He did however sleep next to me from 9-4 woke for a half a bottle and some baby Vicks and slept til 830 this morning so I think he needed his mommy at night since he's sick, husband thinks it was coincidental of course lol stubborn man will not admit I'm better with Liam at bedtime lol but I know it so ill continue to snuggle my sicky boy the next two nights I'm off work so we all get sleep. Thanks everyone for advice and kind words means a lot. Ill keep you updated in his follow up appt at 230
